The expansion and modernization of the El Ahogado Wastewater Treatment Plant and the delivery of a second phase of recycled water for the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara were initiated during an event attended by the governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez. The plant, located in the municipality of El Salto, will allow for the sanitation of more than 70% of the Santiago River.
The governor expressed his satisfaction and pride in the completion of this project, which becomes a cornerstone for rescuing the Santiago River, considered the most contaminated river in Mexico. The new infrastructure of the plant will treat wastewater for industrial and agricultural reuse, thereby preventing the discharge of sewage into the Santiago River that previously flowed openly through the city.
In detail, Alfaro Ramírez explained that the sewage coming from Guadalajara, Tlajomulco, El Salto, Tonalá, and Juanacatlán will be collected and treated at the plant according to the standards of NOM 0001, thus ensuring an efficient sanitation system and reusable clean water.
The total investment of the state administration 2018-2024 aimed at supporting the Santiago River in Jalisco amounts to 6,725 million pesos, covering aspects of health, water resources, and agriculture. Regarding the construction of collectors in 2024, the implementation of 28 kilometers of infrastructure in the El Ahogado basin and intermediate connections is planned with an investment of 875 million pesos.
